Now here’s a guy who had a profound effect on me when I was in my early teens. And I think, just as much as his music, it was his interviews that did it. He answered everything with this matter-of-fact tone that made all the radical things he did in music sound like they flowed naturally from common sense. For a budding introvert, the idea that level-headedness could lead you in surprising, ambitious directions—that it could lead you to do things differently, and better—was very exciting.
I haven’t lived up to that insight quite yet, but we’ll see.
